There’s a little bit more involved in buying 55+, from age restrictions to rules and regulations to activities and amenities. How do you find the right community and the right home? Here are some tips for buying a home in an active adult community.

Understand What Defines an Active Adult Community

Active adult communities aren’t the same as assisted living or retirement communities, which offer medical facilities and basic daily living assistance. Rather, active adult communities are more akin to resort-style communities and are geared towards promoting an active and social lifestyle for retirement-aged people.

Active adult communities have specific age restrictions and requirements that vary from community to community. Typically, at least one resident of every home must be over the age of 55.

Explore the Amenities

Active adult communities promote an activity-filled lifestyle through a huge range of various amenities, like pools and fitness centers, tennis or bocce courts, bike paths or walking trails, and even golf courses. Most also offer additional social groups, activities, and clubs, as well as classes and events.

How far is it to attractions or other things you might like to do, like shopping and dining? How far is the drive to the highway or the airport?
